VOTE LORI JACKMAN Candidate for NLTA President ?2017-19 LORI JACKMAN Mom. Teacher. Advocate. This Is A True Story. ?The only thing that will save us now, is, LOVE. I am a Teacher.? ? ?I faithfully serve an Education system that is flawed and compromised and on it's way to being broken. I serve every day in the trenches with others who are asked to do more and more with less and less. But it is wrong and ultimately self defeating for a UNION of TEACHERS to permit this to continue. Why would you possibly think that the 'top' deserve more and more? Because EVERY government uses our humanity against us. We are the nurturers and caretakers who have been "groomed" to accept a "culture of overwork". A culture of overwork where the most "honourable of professions" (catch phrases used by governments/politicians/our own members), MUST negotiate a lunch break. A culture of overwork that COMPELS almost FOUR THOUSAND WOMEN to WORK for FREE due to required daily supervisory duties, planning, curriculum nights, concerts and report cards. A culture of overwork, where, members of my own NLTA Executive say our Collective Agreement (CA) is a "negotiation", whereas TEACHERS know it is a FIGHT for our very SURVIVAL! They all say, "Class size is NOT a contractual issue. We have NO clout. Teachers will NOT act on this." That's a lot of NOs from a group of people who don't do what we do, every single day! But NOBODY expects resistance from teachers. Especially the Primary/Elementary ones! We are the proverbial 'frog in the pot' and nobody expects resistance because we've been boiled slowly over time to merely accept our fate. Our SOCIETY deserves protection from the mind control of a culture of overwork where a VERY high percentage of women (approx. 4000) and young children, (the most trustworthy of beings), often have their voices ignored and silenced. Hints of sexism that feel like little pats on the head, just to let you know that THEY know it all, and they'll take care of it. But they will NOT take care of us. They'll speak platitudes on the safety and protection of children and how our children are our most valuable resource and then they'll do what they were always going to do... Dump as many students as possible into a square room with one human being... to save money. Manipulate numbers and words on paper... so it appears to the Public that THEY know. Then, download more supervisory duties on us because...we must "protect the children". But, we know, we are the ONLY ones that can stand in defence of children. Only Teachers can step forward and share what is really happening in our schools, due to limited human resources and teacher workload: "If I could just teach." "The paperwork is killing me." "My caseload is impossible but I'm not allowed to have a waiting list." "I've used up all my sick days and they say I don't qualify for LTD." "Too many kids with too many needs and not enough help." "He/she is violent and so we leave the classroom. Nothing gets done about it!" "Forty hours of my own time put into report cards." "I can't get to the ones who just need that little extra help." "Keep your mouth shut or you'll be blacklisted". "Parents have threatened/harassed/insulted me on Facebook." "Nobody can do anything for us, anyway." "I'm on my own!" And this, my fellow Teachers, is how we find our current Collective Agreement. Now, in 2016... ICF LOTTERIES, LACK of human resources, LIMITED mental health supports, COMBINED classes, and LEFTOVER children. But THEY have underestimated our LOVE of children and JOY of teaching. There is no greater feeling, as a Teacher, when you see 'that LIGHT'! So YES, NOW is the TIME of the REAL Teacher. Don't waste my time with 'impossible'. Take your experience, your committees, your degrees and your lies and head back to class. That's the only place you'll EVER see what it's like to work with REAL students, with REAL needs. I am a fierce protector of children and good Teachers. I believe Teachers must be treated justly, today. I believe the only way to ensure children remain society's #1 priority is through the protection of Teachers. Our Collective Agreement is the ONLY way we can protect our children and shield ourselves from the tyranny that seeks to harm those who are most vulnerable. We MUST heal our Education system now. I am a Teacher who will take unpaid leave and use my own money to campaign for this Office. I will answer your calls and respond to your emails as quickly as possible. My own two children, William and Amelia, are the most precious of beings to me and when they were born, I promised to always do everything in my power to protect them. The only way to keep them as safe as possible, when out of my care, is to entrust them to their Teachers. Will you allow me the privilege to stand with you as your President to protect each other and our children? As your President, it will be my DUTY to let the people of this Province know what it is to nurture and care for and teach, the young, in our society today. ?Love must save us all.
